update: COMPLETE THE STREETS

Progress in NC

At the State level: Looks like NC Dept of Transp (NCDOT) is finally going thru a way overdue culture change to less as a road building monopoly and more an agency that builds for all users of streets -  including transit pedestrians and of course bicyclists. Nudging them towards this goal has been a major focus of CABA and our sister non-profit at the State level- NCATA (North Carolina Active Transportation Alliance) for the last 3 years. We now hear that NCDOT has advertised nationally for consultants and has gathered a committee to help them co-chaired by Tracy Newsome from the Charlotte Dept of Transp (CDOT). See SEARCH box for more about “Complete the Streets”.

CABA and the Charlotte Chamber

February 28, 2010

Time to go Green

Guess they’re not so color blind after all: CABA filled out their member survey last week. Apparently the Chamber of Commerce wants to know how serious the business community is about sustainability. Especially how they are factoring it into their day-to-day operations. CABA’s response? We suggested the Chamber rewrite its mission statement to include Earth-friendly / sustainable principles and hire a full-time sustainability coordinator. Contact us if you want to read what we sent them. (We also suggested they lower their annual dues structure to encourage grass-roots NGOs such as CABA to join.)

CENTER CITY 2020 VISION PLAN

February 21, 2010

Input needed...

Attorney Chuck Porter commutes to Center City (but he needs to wear a bike helmet !)

The “Center City 2020 Vision” process continues to move forward with a major public gathering scheduled for later in March. This is the Master Plan that will chart the next decade of change not only within Uptown, but for the surrounding neighborhoods as well. This is a major enterprise involving multiple participation from the business community, neighborhood groups, and key institutions – including CPCC and Johnson C. Smith.

Martin Zimmerman of CABA is serving on the Transportation Working Group and is pushing for a more comprehensive approach to bicycle facilities including showers, a bike station and way-finding signage for cyclists and the promotion of bicycling as a form of “green energy”. We are work closely with community leaders and Charlotte Center City Partners. This process represents an exceptional opportunity for the bike community to influence urban development aligned with sustainable values that is long overdue. GOOD NEWS – BIKE LANES FOR S.Tryon

February 14, 2010

It’s called a “road diet”

Dateline: Feb. 13, Charlotte Observer -  In case you don’t know what “road diet” means, that’s when auto lanes on an existing street are removed or narrowed allowing for wider sidewalks and bike lanes. The idea is to adapt South Tryon Street between Stonewall Street and Carson Boulevard to pedestrians and bicyclists, especially theportion on the  I-277 bridge. Similar to what was done on East Blvd.

The city intends to start with a 90-day demonstration project, starting March 15. They’ll temporarily restripe the lanes on the pavement and put up bollards. Tryon will go from four lanes to three – two northbound and one southbound – between Stonewall and Carson. Thanks to Jim Kimbler, CDOT planner and other city staff for their hard work behind the scenes. For full article,  CLICK: Time to diet

ELECTRIC BIKE BOOM ?

February 14, 2010

Gaining traction world-wide

Reports from Time Magazine and NYTimes say – “Detroit may be introducing electric cardesigns and China may be pushing forward with a big expansion of its highways and trains. But …..delivery workers in New York, postal employees in Germany and commuters from Canada to Japan — are among the millions taking part in a more accidental transportation upheaval It began China where an estimated 120 million electric bicycles now hum along the roads, up from a few thousand in the 1990s. They are replacing traditional bikes and motorcycles at a rapid clip and, in many cases, allowing people to put off the switch to cars. In turn, the booming Chinese electric-bike industry is spurring worldwide interest and impressive sales in India, Europe and the United States. From virtually nothing a decade ago, electric bikes have become an$11 billion global industry.
