History

HOW IT ALL STARTED

B.I.K.E.S. of Charlotte Mecklenburg was founded in 1997 by Dan Faris, Rob Cannon, John Cock and many other advocates.

Early successes included the 1999 city-wide Bicycle Master Plan and Suitability Map and the subsequent hiring of a full-time Bicycle Program Manager to the Charlotte Dept. of Transportation (CDOT) staff. In the decade that followed, we have taken on all aspects vital to local bicyclists’ interests – – – legal rights and safety, community outreach, bike skills training, coalition building, liaison work with bike shops and clubs and successful campaigns for membership development and funding.

NEW NAME, BROADER VISION

Renamed to Charlotte Area Bicycle Alliance (CABA) – a name change took in the summer of 2007 in order to better represent the widest possible spectrum of individual and community interests. We are represented in Washington D.C. and Raleigh through a network of over 140  bicycle advocacy organizations who collectively lobby for bicyclists’ rights and transportation parity.
