NEWS FLASH! Public Workshops

February 8, 2011

Wednesday and Thurs. this week

The city’s Transportation Action Plan TAP (taking the long-range view to 2030) is undergoing its 5-year update. This may seem like boring pie-in -the-sky stuff, but you would be surprised how relevant it the current cycling environment.  We’ve seen a (very) preliminary draft. Dan Gallagher, CDOT staff planner (who works closely with Ken Tippette, bicycle program manager) will be leading these meetings.

CABA will be there, but we need support from you. Come and speak your mind !

If you cannot attend, try this survey instead.

2020 CENTER CITY PLAN update

November 28, 2010

Making our goal come true >

Bike sharing: it's hot ! Click on image for blowup.

The CABA goal is to make sure a strong bicycle component is included in Uptown and the adjoining 16 neighborhoods. We want workplace showers, strategically placed bike parking, bike sharing, bike lanes, bike boxes, a full service bike station, destination signage, etc. These components are consistent with the 2008 Bike Plan. They are necessary ingredients if Charlotte is to compete with other cities.

But questions remain: Is the 2020 plan going to identify what the bike “modal share” should be in Center City ? Will it be 2000 trips per day ? 5000 trips ? 20,000 trips ? An environmentally sustainable life style means  increasing the % of folks biking and walking and decreasing the % driving single occupancy vehicles. A plan without the numbers to back up its vision is just “hope” and not a plan. Especially in recessionary times.

Stay tuned.  The final plan in hardcopy form is still a work in progress; CABA was informed today that a draft will be posted for public review “in a few months”. We will report to you at that time.

CABA IN ASHEVILLE

November 7, 2010

Joins affiliate groups in NC and SC

CABA Board Chair Dan Faris and Exec. Director Martin Zimmerman recently returned from a national “campaign” training session hosted by the Asheville Bicycle Coalition, and  facilitated by Ron Milan, founder of our sister group in Los Angeles and Jeff Miller, CEO of  the Alliance for Bicycling and Walking (ABW), which is CABA’s parent organization in Washington D.C. We learned tons of stuff on campaign goals, tactics and fundraising that have direct application to the Charlotte scene. Thanks to Spencer Lueders, Pamela Murray, Dick Winters and other CABA members  who submitted 14 campaign proposals to take to Asheville.

ACTION ALERT ! Meeting tonight

October 22, 2010

Is Charlotte serious about going “green” ?

Town Hall meeting – tonite – Wednesday

Charlotte City Council member Edwin Peacock, Chair of the Environmental Committee, has put out a last minute notice of a second Town Hall meeting tomorrow evening to ostensibly present for discussion the current status of “Environment and Energy”.

What concerns CABA and affiliate groups like the Sierra Club and Clean Air Carolina is that discussion is so limited when so much is at stake. According to the Sustain Charlotte 2030 report which was launched at a November 1 press conference (speakers included Mayor Foxx and among other notables), “energy” is only one of ten sustainability components.  To cite on obvious example, up to 38% of CO2 emissions in urban areas come from other components such as the transportation sector.

I urge you to attend Wednesday evening and voice your concerns. If the Queen City is really serious about competing in the global marketplace, Charlotte needs to get equally serious about going green.

CABA in CHATTANOOGA

September 14, 2010

National leadership conference

100 leaders meet and greet

Martin Zimmerman, CABA Exec. Director and scholarship grantee - has returned from a gathering aboard the Delta Queen of 100 reps. from sister organizations in the US and Canada sponsored by the Association of Bicycling and Walking (ABW). Valuable information and networking to help the cause of cycling and walking in urban areas. Chattanooga is moving up the charts for its progress as a “green” community and fun place to live. If you go there, make sure to try out the Walnut Street bridge, which is one of the longest car-free bridges in the world.

Another major conference in Chattanooga – ProBike/ProWalk 2010 has been attended by CABA members and supporters Chris Gladora, Dick Winters, and John Cock (Alta Design).
