INT’L PARK(ing) DAY

October 3, 2010

A very clever (grassroots) idea  !

700 parks. 140 cities. 21 countries. 6 continents. The idea is fantastically simple. We saw it in Chattanooga a few weeks ago. The way it works is…..

Step 1 – you (and your city-loving friends) put enough money in a curbside parking meter to allow enough time  to install an instant “people park”.  A bench or two, a pink flamingo, indoor/outdoor carpeting…..and maybe a bike rack.

Step 2 – now the space is yours.  have an urban love-fest or at least hang out till the meter runs out.

Step 3 – put more money in the meter and stay there until your time is up. but don’t forget to get the media to publicize get photos and interview you.  get the word out via social marketing too.

Step 4 – exit site and plan your next harmless, legal and fun battle of urban turf warfare. CLICK: Reclaim your city to find out more, including a nifty video. Note: name, photo and link are copyrighted property of REBAR Group, Inc.

JUNE 12 – WORLD NAKED BIKE RIDE

May 29, 2010

Never heard of it ? This is for real !

According to Wikepedia the World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR), which occurs on June  12…is , well, just that . At least…uh… almost.

The dress code motto is “Bare As You Dare”, meaning total nudity is “not exactly” a requirement. This distinctive form of Critical Mass, occasionally called Critical Ass, is a combination of political protest and street theater. Call it “a natural way to send out a message about sustainable values”.

Alas, poor Charlotte has yet to get its act together. Guess noone wants to trigger a reprisal from County Councilman, Bill James.

The longest bike / ped street in the world

No cars. That’s right. NO cars  allowed – It’s called Stroget. Where?  You guessed it, Copenhagen, Denmark. Chic and  sophisticated. Mixed uses  and authentic architecture.  Not the kitsch Charlotte N.C. brand of urbanity where old buildings are demolished and the car is still king.

stroget

Stroget doesn't need a "brand" . It prefers reality... as do Copenhagen's bicyclists.
