END OF THE CAR CULTURE

June 22, 2010

A generational change…or just a blip ?

Jack Neff argues in Advertising Age mag that …..”The internet has wreaked havoc on the music industry, airlines and media, but it just may be doing the same thing to automobiles…It’s a rarely acknowledged transformational shift that’s been going on under the noses of marketers for as long as 15 years: The automobile, once a rite of passage for American youth, is becoming less relevant to a growing number of people under 30. …” To read the entire article CLICK: Car Killers.

Beach reading ? Try urbanist Richard Florida’s new book The Great Reset, How New Ways of Living and Working Drive the Post-Crash Prosperity. Solid but not too sultry.

The Quiet Rise of the Bicycle in American Public Life

Excerpts from review by Martin Zimmerman, Exec. Director, CABA for Urban Land magazine:

“Now bicycle riding is on the upswing. Beginning…with the environmental movement of the 1970′s, the bicycling phenomenon has regained traction in waays and to a degree that may come as a surprise…so argues DePaul University professor J. Harry Wray…..

“It’s no longer a question of biking as a national pastime submits Wray – it’s about bicycling as an agent of change.  Its quiet rise could not be more timely as the American public seeks ways to cope with global warming, obesity, the era of Peak Oil, rampant consumerism and other pressing issues…”
