NY Times – GLOBAL NEWS UPDATE

August 14, 2011

Take a hike, gas-guzzlers !

Across Europe, irking drivers is urban policy - Sorry. A bit late posting this one. But it’s a must read !

From NYTimes, Environment page, June 26: ” While American cities are synchronizing green lights to improve traffic flow and offering apps to help drivers find parking, many European cities are doing the opposite: creating environments openly hostile to cars. The methods vary, but the mission is clear — to make car use expensive and just plain miserable enough to tilt drivers toward more environmentally friendly modes of transportation…” Thanks to Shannon Binns of local CABA affiliate, Sustain Charlotte, for sending us this article. U.S. CYCLING CENTER BREAKS GROUND

March 25, 2011

Velodrome in Rock Hill

From Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine – Construction begins this month on the U.S. Cycling Center in Rock Hill, S.C. A world-class facility for five different cycling disciplines on a 1,000-acre site situated on the edge of the Catawba River. There will b 7 miles of singletrack, a cyclocross track, a 1.5-mile paved criterium course, a BMX Supercross track, and a 250-meter concrete velodrome. Velodromes are cycling tracks with 42-degree banked walls. They’re popular in Europe, but almost non-existent in the Southeast.

CABA Board of Advisor member, and founder of 24 Hours of Booty, Spencer Lueders, has played a key role an making this project a reality. Much thanks to Spencer and his peers ! And thanks to Andrew Israel for bringing this to our attention. Rock Hill council members are convinced that a comprehensive cycling center will attract two-wheelers and their wallets.
