NY Times – GLOBAL NEWS UPDATE

Take a hike, gas-guzzlers !

Across Europe, irking drivers is urban policy - Sorry. A bit late posting this one. But it’s a must read !

From NYTimes, Environment page, June 26: ” While American cities are synchronizing green lights to improve traffic flow and offering apps to help drivers find parking, many European cities are doing the opposite: creating environments openly hostile to cars. The methods vary, but the mission is clear — to make car use expensive and just plain miserable enough to tilt drivers toward more environmentally friendly modes of transportation…” Thanks to Shannon Binns of local CABA affiliate, Sustain Charlotte, for sending us this article. Setting the standard

Imagine traffic lights in Charlotte for BOTH cars AND bikes. Now that’s REAL pedal power ! Bike lights are fairly common in Europe, but only two cities in the USA deploy them - from a recent tour by CABA Board member – Weldon Weaver

Brrrrrr….bad winter in Copenhagen

Makes Charlotte seem like a paradise.

From the blog Copenhaginze.com:..”this winter has been hard so far and we’re running out of salt and the snow …… In Copenhagen the streets are divided up into A, B, and C roads. ‘A’ roads have high priority, ‘B’ less so and ‘C’ roads, in a winter like this, don’t see much clearance action. Nevertheless, the bicycle traffic is highly prioritized and the bicycles, by and large, roll on.

“No silly trips” campaign

Recent report from Grist mag. on-line:  ”A clever public health campaign in Malmö, Sweden, is getting people onto bikes by making them feel silly for driving short distances when they could bike instead. The campaign was launched four years ago with the goal of getting people to stop using their cars for journeys of less than 5 kilometers, or about 3 miles….”

Malmö, is about the same size as Charlotte. It was named on a list of 15 green cities by Grist  in 2007. To read the entire article and see the video, CLICK: Day tripping.
