UNC Charlotte Urban Institute estimates that over 300,000 bicycles are gathering dust in the garages of Charlotte-Mecklenburg. Isn’t it time they took to the streets, greenways and trails of our community ?
Send us your comments, photos or articles so we can share them.

Big campaign ! We need your help…
Where should we install them ? Which locations ?

Free bike racks
CABA is working with CDOT (Charlotte Dept of Transportation) to install single-loop bike racks.
The goal is 100 racks in time for the annual Bike Week festivities in early May. Generally, the CDOT guidelines are: 1) racks should go on private land ( not public sidewalks ); 2) racks need to be within 50 ft. of a public entrance and on existing concrete or asphalt paved areas including parking lots [not at rear employee entrances or in parking decks]; 3) no more than 1 rack per entrance; 4) locations should generally be commercial and offices [housing, places of worship, public buildings and hospitals do NOT qualify]; 5) properties also do not qualify if CDOT racks are already in place.
Racks, including installation costs are FREE ! All racks painted black and heavy duty steel.
Got ideas ? Click the “Leave a comment” bubble below and let us know. Let’s make this program a big success ! ! Thanks to CABA member John Harding for recording locations we have received already (as of Jan 18) on a Google map. Check out this map so that you don’t duplicate earlier efforts.

It’s coming again..two full weeks !

The crowd gathers for a big breakfast of scrambled eggs, fresh salad, pastry and grits at Wachovia Plaza at a typical Mayor's ride
Mark your calendar for April 30. NOTE: Mayor’s ride to be May 7 this year instead of April 30.
2010 marks the 10th year of May biking recognition for people of all shapes, colors, skills and age, and interests to participate for health, the environment, and just plain fun. Support the cause of cycling !
Thanks to CDOT and others in city government who have resuscitated these community-wide festivities at a time of fiscal constraint. Special thanks to Neal Boyd of Charlotte Sports Bicycling who will be handled this project again this year.

New CATS CEO Carolyn Flowers
Many challenges face the Charlotte Area Transit System – As Dan and Martin found out this week, chief among these, you guessed it, budgets ! Especially working to channel more federal funds into Charlotte’s non-auto modes of travel. Also discussed were accommodations for bikes on LYNX cars, bike “blinkie” light giveaways to bus users as well as potentials for safe and secure cycling along the entire length of the NE LYNX light rail to UNCC and beyond.

Charlotte ranks low…..low……low
And so does much of the rest of the U.S. Southeast
Yes, bicycling is supposed to make us healthier, but it all depends on how clean our air is. And the sad thing is that even active adults can get asthma. The Observer has done a good job informing the public that if the EPA gets its way, Federal clean air standards may be tightened. But testimony from personal experience does a lot more than abstract number crunching to bring the point home.
Read about Jedd Harris’ s experience in Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine CLICK: Gasping for Air.. Thanks to CABA member John Harding who alerted us in his CABA blog comment last week to Jedd’s article.
