“UNC Charlotte Urban Institute estimates that there are 300,000 bicycles gathering dust in the garages of Charlotte-Mecklenburg. Isn’t it time they took to the streets, greenways and mountain trails of our community ?

June 30, 2009

Thanks Jessica, Joey and Common Market

Jessica munches for CABA

CABA bakesalesignWe raised a decent amount of money and talked to local bike enthusiasts from Eugene, Oregon, Boulder, Colorado and Orlando, Florida and a guy who lives car-free. Common Market is a major gathering spot for the funky urban grunge crowd of the Plaza Midwood neighborhood. Sure beats a sports bar. No plasma screens in this place. Very friendly staff. Stay and linger.

2 MORE BIKE CRASHES

June 30, 2009

Hal Misenheimer and Daniel Knight

We wish them both a speedy recovery. Hal was struck at Park Road and Carolina Place and Daniel was struck at Selwyn and Welseley in the Booty Loop.  No citations given to the second driver because she “didn’t see” the bicyclist. The “didn’t see” alibi typically gets the driver off hassle free. Go figure. For graphics and detailed text and get-well comments see: CharlotteVelo.

CABA FORUM RESULTS- NEast LYNX Rail

June 30, 2009

City to Hire Bicycle Consultant

At the CABA sponsored public forum on June 8  City of Charlotte Project Manager Jim Keenan announced that a consultant is expected to be hired later this year to work with the bicycle community on ways to integrate a bikeway route parallel to the corridor from Uptown to UNC Charlotte.  This is major news for bicycling in Charlotte !Corridor_Base_Map_NO_SCDO - 012709-rev

Much thanks also to Andy Mock (CATS), Kathy Cornett (City Planning staff station coordinator) and Ken Tippette (CDOT bicycle program manager) for helping an enthusiastic audience sort through the status and complexities of this long-term project.

CABA hopes to form a core monitoring committee in the next month to keep the interest and momentum going. Please respond using the “comments” tab just below this photo if you wish to be on the email notification list for this committee ~ ~

CAR-FREE FRIDAYS IN PITTSBURGH

June 30, 2009

If they can do it so can we

Pittsburgh is a city about the same size as Charlotte (and just as hot in the summer !). The local bicycle advocacy group – Bike PGH – (which just happens to have over twice as many members as CABA….ugh) launched a city-wide initiative earlier this summer to encourage commuters to leave their cars at home at least once a week.  “Car Free Fridays” – are  days  when the air is a little cleaner and the streets a little safer.  A day to welcome the use of smart transportation. For more info, see: Pittsburgh rides proud.
